In The Wake Of

Single-channel video, audio

2016

‘In The Wake Of’ attempts to communicate the universal struggle to keep above water. A metaphor for so many unavoidable moments in the span of a lifetime, the video is synced with an interview I recorded of my eighty-five year old grandfather soon after the passing of his wife. The interview is in our native Russian, the words becoming lost as waves repeatedly wash overhead. The video loops continuously in reference to my inability to broach the subject of mortality, and to inquire of his experience living at the final stages of life.

Installation view at Aggregate Space Gallery as part of a group show titled "Environmental Estrangement" in January 2017, and the Second Saturdays artist talk that followed.
